Biography

Troika is a London based studio founded by Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel who are widely known for their experimental practise, sculptures, installations and projects that provoke and employ a cross-disciplinary approach and intersect between design, architecture, and contemporary installation.

They met while studying at the Royal College of Art and subsequently started their studio in 2003, emerging as an integrated practice that creates work collectively through detailed research, dialogue and experiment.

Often merging technology with their projects as a point of departure but also to actify their installations, their work explores the intersection of scientific thought, observation and human experience, and is driven by a strong interest in the organisation and physical effects of technology and materials, and how objects can be used to create dialogues, drive narratives and stage experiences within a social or physical context.

While their work is often filled with polarities — solitude and interaction, transition and permanence, the artificial and the natural — their interest lies within man’s resolve to synthesize these opposites.

They look at our surroundings from a different perspective while setting the scene with scenarios and experiences that are notable in their formal simplicity and that use sound, sight and movement as a tool for expression.

Since establishing the studio in 2003 Troika’s work has been exhibited, amongst others, at the Victoria & Albert Museum London, The Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Britain and MoMA New York. In 2010 Troika were selected to create three art installations for the UK Pavilion at the World Expo Shanghai. Troika’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Israel Museum Jerusalem, British Council, The Art Institute of Chicago, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum Of Modern Art New York.

Troika has authored two books to date: Digital by Design, Thames and Hudson, 2008; Moscow Style, Booth-Clibborn Editions, 2005, and, in 2009, won the D&AD Yellow Pencil for their digital sculpture ‘Cloud’ in London Heathrow Terminal 5 and ‘Palindrome’ at the V&A in 2011. In 2012 Troika was nominated for the Design of the Year Award by the Design Museum.

Biography

Samson Young (b.1979), composer, sound artist and new media artist. With formal training in music composition, an eye for visuals and a keen interest in emergent technologies, Young has been known to combine his diverse expertise into uniquely intermedia experiences. His works are fundamentally informed by an engagement with new cultural-technological paradigms, yet deeply grounded in the classical musical tradition. Young’s creative output spans the widest possible range: from composition for orchestra and gameboys, to amusement ride-turned-sound installation, to ensembles of ipad and iphones, to multimedia music theatre. Described by Sequenza 21 as “epic, dark and fun,” a sense of play that comes from breaking down preconceived boundaries unifies all of his work.

Young belongs to a new breed of composer-artists whose work speak to communities across disciplinary divides. In 2007, Young became the first from Hong Kong to receive the Bloomberg Emerging Artist Award with his audio-visual project “the Happiest Hour.” In 2009, CNN’s global portal CNNgo named him one of the top “20 people to watch in Hong Kong.” Young was Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s artist associate in the 2008/09 season, and since then he has maintained a close relationship with the orchestra, working in the capacity of composer-director in a range of multimedia productions. These include: Electric Kinderszenen, a piano-installation project featuring Colleen Lee; Box of Revelation, a multimedia rendition of Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps; and the popular “Know-Your” concert series.
